It's a beautiful day, the sun is streaming, there isn't a cloud in the sky and
there is a smell of freshly cut grass wafting through the currents of warm
air. In the distance an ice cream van's hypnotic melodies promise instant
refreshment. Days like this are meant for the garden.
Who cares? Metal Gear Solid is now available for the PlayStation 3, so why,
oh why would you want to waste time lounging around in the garden? Get to
your lounge, get to your bedroom, get anywhere where there is a PS3 - This
game demands it.
John McClane, Rocky, Rambo, Indiana Jones and now Solid Snake.
What is it with action heroes coming back to the screen in their old age?
The zimmer years are clearly upon us.
Despite Solid Snake being an old man in Metal Gear Solid 4, the events of the game take place only 5 years after Metal Gear Solid 2. Snake is ageing at a rapid rate, a rate that may only grant him another year of life.
Metal Gear Solid 4 is split down into 5 acts, each providing a fairly unique style of gameplay but all laden with rich and mostly beautiful FMV sequences that could make even some of the biggest Hollywood movies look pathetic. And to top it all off is a Dolby Digital soundtrack that provides an absolute feast of audible delights.
It's difficult to find any flaws in the in-game graphics; they are probably some of the finest to be seen. The detail, the lighting and even the physics work harmoniously to create a truly magnificent looking title.
Stealth lover will be glad to hear that the OctoCamo suite has made a return (from Metal Gear 3) but this time players can absorb their surroundings patterns like a chameleon, as opposed to having to access a menu to find the best suited camouflage.
Metal Gear Solid 4 has brought with it, the first ever on-line gameplay mode to be featured within a Metal Gear game. Not only does this help to greatly increase the longevity of the game, but it's also damn fun and is undoubtedly one of the best PS3 on-line games.
Creator, Hideo Kojima has done it again. He's delivered a solid game with solid gameplay - He's delivered us Solid Snake.
SCORE: 9 / 10
