Winchester gears up for The Passion
FINAL preparations are
under way for The
Winchester Passion, the
most ambitious theatrical
event ever to hit its streets.
An audience of thousands
is expected to watch the
outdoor drama of the trial,
death and resurrection of
Jesus on Good Friday,
March 21.
Some 80 local actors have
speaking parts, there are
200 extras and production
crew of around 300. Israel
Oyelumade, who plays
Jesus, is the only professional
actor.
Around 20,000 leaflets
have been hand-delivered
to homes across the city.
The production starts on
Oram's Arbour at 6pm
before heading down the hill
to the Law Courts and then
on to the cathedral.
For those who do not want
to follow the performance
through the streets, giant
screens will be erected at
the Law Courts and on the
Cathedral Outer Close.
Writer Philip Glassborow
said: "We'll hit the streets of
Winchester with the passion
story in a way that makes it
relevant and understandable
for people today - especially
those who don't know the
story."
The producers are advising
people to arrive early
and dress up warm in case
of cold weather.
Park and ride and bus
services have been extended
into the evening.
Before the show there will
be a festival from 5pm on
Oram's Arbour with stalls
and entertainment from,
among others, the Hamble
Area Youth Band, the
Winchester Morris Men and
donkeys from Crabwood
Farm.
Other stalls will be taken
by local organisations, such
as the Emmaus Project, the
Scouts, the Army, Traidcraft
and Winchester Action on
Climate Change.
The fete provides a suitable
festival atmosphere
against which the Roman
occupation of the city and
local discontent can take
place.
Into this fevered environment,
Jesus and his disciples
enter and the story
IN REHEARSALS: The Winchester Passion cast get set for their Good Friday performance. begins.
