Rocking night in memory of Heinz
IT has become an annual event to salute one of the most famous hands to work on the Ford production line at Southampton's giant Transit van-making factory.
Last year the Ford Sports and Social Club staged a tribute night in memory of the late Heinz Burt, who grew up in Eastleigh and rocketed to fame in the 1960s with that legendary single Telstar.
It was such a huge success that Ford's is hosting another tribute night.
Heinz was the bass player with The Tornados, who became the first British band to get a number one hit on both sides of the Atlantic.
When Heinz left the orbit of rock 'n' roll he returned to live in his home town and in the early 80s worked at Ford's Swaythling plant.
Heinz died eight years ago after a brave battle against motor neurone disease (MND) He was only 57.
On Saturday, April 5 - just two days before the anniversary of Heinz's death - many of his old Ford workmates will be in the audience to watch what promises to be another feast of rock 'n' roll.
A fitting tribute to a musician who became Hampshire's own 60s icon, it will be headlined by veteran rock 'n' roller Wee Willie Harris.
MC for the evening will be Tony Harte, lead singer of The Honeycombs, who also shared a 60s stage with Heinz.
Another personal friend starring in the tribute night will be Geoff Holland, who will be performing his brilliant interpretation of Billy Fury numbers.
Top hits from the songbooks of Sir Cliff Richard and the Everly Brothers will also feature in the nostalgia-packed evening.
This latest tribute night comes at a time when Heinz's life will be documented in two films set to hit the big screen this year.
A Life in the Death of Joe Meek - the pop guru who turned Heinz into an overnight star - will be getting its English premiere on April 12 in Sheffield.
The American producers interviewed Heinz's family and Daily Echo journalist Duncan Eaton, who knew Heinz for more than 20 years.
Heinz's leading role in the Joe Meek stable will also be featured in a block-busting movie, Telstar, starring Kevin Spacey and Con O'Neill.
Tribute night co-organiser Colin White says that proceeds from the tribute night, which starts at 8pm, will be in aid of the work of the Southampton branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association.
n Admission is by ticket only, which cost £10 each. Call 023 8032 2677.
