‘Fat lady’ will sing at final Tower show
A WINCHESTER venue will go out with a bang at its last
concert next week.
The last gig, on Thursday, will be a sell-out show by the Otway Big Band, plus performance poetry by John Cooper Clarke and Attila the Stockbroker.
A specially written opera aria will be sung while a 15ft inflatable woman is blown up.
The finale will be a fireworks display.
"It was the closest we could get to a fat lady singing," said John Tellett, the veteran director, who is leaving after 30 years.
Fantastic'
He added: "It is the last gig. It is completely sold out. It has been a fantastic last season, with lots of sell-outs.
"Thanks to everyone who has been so loyal over the years, and particularly the last few months."
Hampshire County Council has controversially transferred the running of the venue to the school. A campaign, including a 1,244-signature petition to the Prime Minister, failed to influence the council. Mr Tellett will be replaced by Ben Ward, a local music promoter.
The new programme is due to be launched in September.
It will move away from the predominantly music and comedy offering under Mr Tellett.
The county council is committing £75,000 over the next three years to help develop a programme at the Tower and other venues around the city.
Council leader Ken Thornber said: "The Tower is not closing. On the contrary, it will continue to provide a secure and sustainable future while developing programming that exploits the potential of all venues
in the city."
