Hampshire free range pig farmer Greenfield Pork Products has been awarded Supreme Champion of The 2008 Great Hampshire, Sausage, Pie & Ready Meal Competition, held yesterday February 14th, for their Hampshire pork and bramley apple sausage.

Martin Martindale of Greenfield Pork Products fought off stiff competition at this annual county competition organised by county food group Hampshire Fare.

The competition, held at Sparsholt College, attracted 244 individual entries from 28 Hampshire butchers and meat farmers. Judges awarded 68 gold certificates and 13 trophies. In addition to winning Supreme Champion, Martin scooped champion trophies for Best Hampshire Sausage, Best Speciality Pork Sausage, Best Valentines Sausage and Best Hampshire Farmers' Market Entry. Upon receiving his trophy, Martin said: "I am chuffed to bits! I started making sausages about five years ago and have entered this competition for the last five years.

I have been working towards winning Supreme Champion, and came close a couple of times, so to win this year is fantastic!" Martin's Supreme Champion sausage contains his own free range pork, Hill Farm apple juice and Blackmoor Farm Shop bramley apples.

He puts the emphasis on the quality of his meat reared with the highest standards of animal welfare, and using complementary Hampshire ingredients for his winning recipe.

Competition facilitator John Holden described the competition as a keenly fought contest', adding; "given that entries come from a single county, this is the best attended regional competition that I am involved in".

The Great Hampshire, Sausage, Pie & Ready Meal competition is organised by county food group Hampshire Fare and sponsored by The British Pig Executive, with support from Hampshire County Council, Lucas Ingredients and New Forest Marque. John organised a judging team of professional sausage makers from across the UK who adhere to strict national judging criteria, together with specially invited local guests to assist with judging.

John Clayton, Presenter on Wave 105 FM who was invited to judge alongside the professional judges said: "I have been really impressed with the quality and huge variety of products that are available right on our doorstep. It's great that Wave 105 is a corporate partner of Hampshire Fare, who do so much to encourage people to buy local produce.

All of the meat here at the competition today is locally sourced, which makes it is possible to trace it origins, and shows that it's of good quality. I have to say the judging today has been very difficult, as all of the produce was of such a high standard."

Greenfield Pork Products are based at Anna Valley near Andover. They are regular stallholder at Hampshire Farmers' Markets, and their hog roast is a particular favourite with shoppers at these markets. Greenfield Pork will be at Andover Hampshire farmers Market this Sunday 17th February (10am-2pm), and at Winchester on Sunday 24th February (9am-2pm), where their award winning sausages will be on sale.

Competition organiser Tim Brock of Hampshire Fare says, "The competition was a resounding success, attracting a good mix of butchers and farmers from across Hampshire to enter some good quality products.

Hopefully these results will encourage more people to buy their meat direct from Hampshire's independent butchers, farm shops and at Hampshire farmers' markets."

This year's competition also included a special seasonal category for a Valentine's Day sausage, which attracted entries such as 'Cupid's Red Devil', Love in the Afternoon', Valentino', and Heart of Hampshire'.
