The Platform Tavern

IT'S hard to imagine a friendly locals pub situated in the hustle and bustle of the city centre.

But after visiting the Platform Tavern opposite Town Quay this week I've realised such a pub does exist.

The pub and now also a restaurant enjoys a warm friendly atmosphere, with the open fire being a particular feature especially at this time of year!

That together with its renowned live music almost leads you to believe you are sat in your country local.

Open from 10am-1pm Friday, Saturday and Sunday for breakfast, the pub caters for every need. The main pub menu becomes available from lunch until dinner and its new addition, the fresh fish restaurant, is open from Thursday to Saturday evenings 7-10pm.

For those looking for something more traditional, Sundays could be the day to visit with a full roast menu being served from 12pm to 8pm serenaded by live jazz from 1.30pm to 4.30pm and acoustic blues from 8.30pm to 10.30pm.

I visited the pub on a surprisingly busy Monday evening to sample the delights of The Platform's pub menu. But this wasn't any normal pub grub.

It was busy for a Monday and we sat in the new restaurant extension and could still enjoy the blues music being played in the bar.

Myself and my partner chose to share a bowl of Mexican Nachos - Tortilla chips with chilli, melted cheese, jalapeno peppers, salsa, sour cream and gaucamole. It was excellent.

For my main course I chose to order from the daily specials board which featured a good selection of dishes. I opted for the seared tuna steak served with a mustard sauce, new potatoes and fresh vegetables, the fish was cooked to perfection and the sauce divine.

My partner chose from the main menu and ordered the 8oz sirloin steak served with potatoes and fresh vegetables topped with either peppered, Stilton or Diane sauce. As a cheese lover he went for the Stilton sauce. Again his meal was of an extremely high standard and he polished off every mouthful.

Desserts both hot and cold are served from the specials board but we were far too full to even attempt them so we decided to save that for next time.

The superb meals were washed down with a couple of glasses of what I was told to be top real ale, and of course a soft drink for myself, the driver!

After leaving the pub we both commented on the quality of our meals and with the menu priced at very reasonable prices.

So if you're looking for somewhere to eat you can't go wrong with the Platform Tavern.
