Adele – Southampton Guildhall
ADELE has come a very long way in a very short time.
As she told the packed audience at Southampton Guildhall on Saturday night, last time she took to the stage in Southampton - at the end of last year - she played to a crowd of no more than 100 at music bar Hamptons.
Now she can command a near-capacity crowd at the Guildhall.
Perhaps the transition has been a little fast though - she said herself that she was nervous on a number of occasions and although she chatted with the audience throughout the evening there was something about her performance that missed the spot.
Given that she's still a teenager and was playing to an audience who ranged from children to at least fifty-somethings perhaps this is not that surprising.
While she will almost certainly grow as a performer - after all her voice is stunning - it felt like there was something missing from the weekend's gig which felt little formulaic.
And while members of the audience did scream every now and then she wasn't actually called for an encore - though she returned to the stage anyway.
That said, there can be no question that Adele has a strong, soulful voice and she didn't hit a bad note in her hour-long set.
The song that everyone was waiting to hear was Chasing Pavements - which was, of course, the last song of the night and got everyone at the seated gig on their feet.
Other highlights included a cover of The Coral's Dreaming of You, new single Cold Shoulder and a cover of Bob Dylan's Make You Feel My Love, which she said was her favourite song to perform.
The show was good but maybe Adele's transition from playing to audiences of tens to one of hundreds has just been too fast. The good news is that she is sure to grow into her performances with age and when she returns to Southampton later this year it will almost certainly be fantastic.
