Nutcracker

MATTHEW Bourne's box office busting Nutcracker arrives at The Mayflower on Tuesday.

The international phenomenon took £1.8m at the box office at the Sadler's Wells over Christmas and a further £1.9m on tour so far, being seen by half a million ballet lovers.

This delicious theatrical feast has family sized helpings of Matthew Bourne's trademark wit, pathos and magical fantasy. Nutcracker follows Clara's bittersweet journey from a hilariously bleak Christmas Eve at Dr. Dross' Orphanage for waifs and strays, through a shimmering, ice-skating, winter wonderland to the scrumptious candy kingdom of Sweetieland.

Tchaikovsky's glorious score and Olivier award-winning designer, Anthony Ward's unforgettable sets and costumes combine with sizzling choreography to create a fresh, hip and charming interpretation of the traditional favourite.

This revival of Nutcracker forms part of an ongoing New Adventures repertory which includes some of the most successful dance productions of the last two decades including Swan Lake and Edward Scissorhands.

n Tickets for Matthew Bourne's Nutcracker, which runs until Saturday May 17, are on sale from 023 8071 1811 or online at mayflower.org.uk.
