Show that honours memory of Minghella
Alan Rickman
Alan Rickman

WITH Hollywood film star Alan Rickman in the role of narrator it was a given that this first visit to The Point by the Jonathan Lunn Dance Company would play to full houses.

Add in the detail that the performance was part written by and included recorded commentary from the late Anthony Minghella, inset right, and the performances take on an added poignancy.

Minghella and Lunn were friends at university and collaborated on this exploration of the ways in which humans connect and disconnect. Self Assembly, the final act, was Minghella's creation, likening human relations to the instructions for a newly acquired product.

Rickman acting as narrator set the scenes with works by Billy Collins, Samuel Beckett, Raymond Carver and Minghella. The dancers put moving flesh to words.

At times passionate, at times indifferent, at times loving, at times violent: humans connected, disconnected, broke apart and made up.

The setting was simple with tremendous use of sound and lighting.

The company received a standing ovation which was well deserved, none more so than the members of the Hampshire Youth Dance Company.

Lunn has used other famous names as narrator during this tour: Juliet Stevenson, Miranda Richardson, Dexter Fletcher.

He has commented that if this brings fresh audiences to his work then all to the good.

Rickman fans at this weekend's performances can't fail to have been given much to consider.
