Interviews
Scouting for Girls
SCOUTING For Girls are a
piano-led trio from Harrow,
North London.
Long-time friends Roy
Stride, Greg Churchouse
and Pete Ellard make up the threesome,
and tell nostalgic tales of
childhood, with references to The
Really Wild Show, James Bond
and He-Man, among other things,
to make melodic, classic-sounding
pop songs.
After forming an online fan club,
The Wolfcubs, they garnered a
massive following while still being
an unsigned band. They have a
contract with SonyBMG offshoot
Epic, and made the top ten with
debut single Shes So Lovely.
Your songs were written a while
back, did re-recording them for the
album make them sound fresh again?
Roy: Definitely. They sound
totally new. When you write a
song, you listen to it about a thousand
times, then we recorded
demos and listened to them a
lot, and now weve recorded
them again, but I still love what
weve done.
The album sounds quite big, but
there are only three of you. Are
there lots of overdubs on the
album?
Roy: There are a few overdubs,
but the main difference is
the drums, which really add
something. We used to love
percussion, like shakers and
tambourines, when we made
our own recordings. There
are lots of guitars on the
album though. We put
loads of things on the album C
whatever we thought might work.
Do you remember where you were
when you first heard your music on
the radio?
Roy: I heard it on shows in the
middle of the night when we were
unsigned, but the first time I heard
our music when I didnt expect it
was on Jonathan Ross show. I
was in bed and I heard it faintly. I
thought I didnt put that on and
then ran downstairs and doublechecked
on another radio. I was
actually supposed to be driving
somewhere
that
morning, but didnt go. I think if Id
heard it at the wheel I would have
crashed.
Youve been together only two years.
Are you amazed how quickly everything
has happened?
Greg: Well Scouting For Girls
havent been together for that long,
but weve been playing in different
bands together for ten or 12
years.
Roy: Im amazed. Less than a
year ago we all had jobs!
Whats been the biggest culture
shock since then?
Greg:
I think
people
coming up to me at the end of
shows asking me to sign things. Or
people whove just heard the
songs on MySpace or whatever
knowing all the words to our
songs.
Pete: Being told that were good!
Your mates will always say its
good after a gig, mainly because
they were at the bar when we were
on and didnt hear it.
Roy: I think its the same as it
was, but without the annoyance of
a full-time job!
Your videos so far have featured lots
of beautiful girls. Is that a personal
request?
Roy: (laughs) Whats wrong
with that?!
Pete: I think were having a bikini
beach party for the next single.
Roy: Seriously, one of the ideas
for the next single is like a Trigger
Happy TV thing, which is very
exciting.
Pete: Of course, therell
be hot girls in bikinis there
too.
Roy: Depending on
budget.
