Local Bands with Xan Phillips
HAVING to say no is never fun,
especially when you are dealing with musicians who are putting their heart and soul into their songs.
With the Original Showcase
receiving more CDs each week the amount of rejections is naturally increasing.
And no one sends in music because they think it's rubbish.
But telling the truth is better than a lie; most people appreciate the
honesty.
A current source of inspiration
is X-Factor judge Simon Cowell.
His approach might seem brash but he does tell the truth and usually
mirrors your thoughts about the
contestant's performance.
This honesty is respected within the music industry and Hampshire singer/songwriter Barry Upton (the creator of Steps) once told me that Simon Cowell, "was extremely honest and the whole music industry liked him because of that."
But although you are doing "the right thing" it doesn't make it any
easier telling someone that the tracks that they really believe in aren't good enough.
However honesty is one thing musicians need and, to be honest, they really need it most from their family and friends: the people they play their demos to.
Songwriters can become so involved with their music they are unable to step back and actually say: "Is this good enough?"
Usually it is, but a well-chosen selection of honest friends and family can give a second opinion that is invaluable.
