Wombats fire up new generation of indie rockers
The Wombats epitomise all that's good about indie music at the moment.
Their energy certainly set the Guildhall rocking last night.
A young crowd, representing a new generation of rock'n'roll fans, jumped and shouted to every song.
Fresh from their European tour the band enjoyed every minute of their packed Guildhall gig.
The three-piece are made up of two born-and-bred Scousers and one Norwegian.
Frontman Matthew Murphy - who sports what can only be described as a trademark Harry Enfield Scouser haircut - clearly enjoyed his interaction with the crowd. Completing the band's line-up are drummer/second vocalist Dan Haggis and bass guitarist Tord Overland-Knudsen.
They finished with a memorable encore that featured a giant Wombat named Arnie floating above the stage - something I for one have never seen before.
The Wombats' stunning debut album, The Wombats Proudly Present: A Guide to Love, Loss and Desperation, released last November, has been widely acclaimed by indie fans.
Tracks such as Kill the Director, I'm Moving to New York and the latest single release Backfire at the Disco, were sung out loud by an adoring Southampton crowd.
Whether you define their music as hard indie rock or indie pop, on a Monday night the Wombats certainly gave us that Friday feeling.
