Review: Once a catholic
Innuendo Theatre Group, Thorngate Halls, Gosport
ITG's production of Mary O'Malley's Once a Catholic - a 1950s convent school set comedy of the nuns' battle against changing society, inquisitive teenagers, boys and Elvis Presley - brilliantly captured the incisive wit and sense of period of the play.
Tightly directed and well paced, the production made
a virtue of the play's episodic structure to present comedy sketches.
Strongly acted by all the cast, with well drawn characters, there were particular comic gems of performances from Sarah Miatt as Mother Peter and Jerry Rawlings as the continually wrong footed Father Mullarkey.
The costumes were meticulous, showing a fine eye not only for period detail but for the less attractive aspects of school uniform.
A few of the scene changes and the lighting were not quite perfected on the first night, but this was a minor quibble. It was a treat for Catholics and non-Catholics alike.
