Curtain Call
Charley's Aunt
CHARLEY'S Aunt by Brandon Thomas, first performed in 1892, is now a bit of a creaky period piece, but well done still has the capacity to amuse. Chesil Theatre's assured production elicited the maximum laughter value from the play, creating an entertaining evening.
The scene setting first act was a little slow. But the production and the pace really came alive from act two with the arrival of "Charley's aunt".
Charles Seligman was impressive in the dual role of Lord Fauncourt Babberley and "Charley's aunt". As the aunt he bore an uncanny resemblance to Griff Rhys Jones and shared with him affability and good comic timing. He was given solid support from the uniformly strong ensemble cast, with Noel Thorpe-Tracey making an impression as the avaricious guardian Stephen Spettigue.
The impressive set made a merit of clever design, use of space and flexibility.
