Sweet laughter

Can you sum yourself up in one sentence? "The laziest comedy genius you are ever likely to see."

What can we expect from your stand up show? "Well maybe a comedy genius if he wasn't so lazy."

Were you really born in Woolworths? "My mums waters broke there, you see she had gone for pick 'n' mix because she was off to hospital to get induced because I was two weeks late, see, already lazy. Anyway she says I made a small appearance in the managers office and she was rushed around to my nan's, she lived the closest, and I made a full entrance there."

Who is your comedy idol? "Stan and Ollie, Tony Hancock and Sam Kinison."

What's been the most treasured moment of your career so far? "I've been performing since I was a kid, so it's all I know. There is always something to treasure every few months. Here's a few: opening for Bob Hope, dancing in my pants in front of Ann Widdecombe, being slapped by Jean Claude Van Damme, playing myself in Byker Grove, Mel C straddling meit goes on."

What's your favourite naff joke? "My favourite is a visual one, so if you read this come up to me and ask me to do it."

Who's the funniest person you know and why? "The agent, Addison Cresswell. He looks after the biggest acts in this country and behaves like he is running a car lot."

Where do you get inspiration for your show from? " I don't know, I climb on stage and it sort of dribbles out. I've never written a thing down, again, part of me being lazy. I see other comics seeing something and getting out a pen and paper and they're away. Not me, I think I'm about to be inspired and then I see a pie and everything in my mind is wiped clean."

What would you be doing if you hadn't made it as a comedian? "I would be a chef, It's just like performing. The food is your set, the eater your audience."

What have been the best and worst gigs of your career? "44,000 people in a baseball stadium in Canada was, well, fantastic. When you got a laugh it rolled on forever. Worst, I did a concert for the BBC at Alexandra Palace, all music and me to 3,000 kids in a mosh pit. I was on between Goldie Lookin' Chain and Razorlight. My ego was saying get out there', my performer's defence mechanism was going you are gonna die'."

What's your best put down for hecklers? "Like I'm gonna say and tell everyone! My favourite is Harry Hill's. He would say Well you can say what you like to me, but I'm happy in the knowledge I have a nice casserole waiting for me at home.'"

Do you have any mad fans? What sort of antics do they get up to? "Not recently, only death threats."

Who's the most famous person in your phone book? "I've been part of the comedy circuit for years, I would say I was close friends with a lot of people who appear regularly on your telly. But outside the comedy world I used to live with Daniel Craig, he's that boy who runs around with a licence to kill."

Andre Vincent is in the Comedy Bar at The Nuffield, Southampton, on Sunday. Tickets: £8. Box office: 023 8061 1771 or book online at nuffieldtheatre.co.uk
